Full injury details on MYC 2018 competitor Tegan Nox
Tegan Nox, the 23 year old Welshwoman who had to bow out last year’s Mae Young Classic (MYC) when she tore her ACL, suffered another knee injury during this year’s tournament was widely known. When it happened at the tapings, WWE announced it shortly after those in attendance began sharing it online. Nox (real name Stephanie Newell) issued a statement vowing to make another comeback.
Neither WWE nor Nox offered specifics of the match where it occurred, other than to say it happened on a dive. But all other reports mentioned the round and her opponent, so many fans knew it was airing tonight (Oct. 17) on WWE Network.
Even knowing in advance, it was still tough to watch…
Props to both Tegan for trying to work through it, despite clearly knowing something was wrong immediately, and to her opponent Rhea Ripley, who employs the “show must go on” attitude a performer has to, playing her mean-spirited character to the hilt and offering no quarter while still trying to protect her partner.
If seeing her bang the ring steps in frustration and plead with the referee that she’s okay wasn’t heartbreaking enough, WWE also released an exclusive backstage video. It starts with Nox bawling as medical staff tend to her, cutting her boot and kick pad off so they can treat her knee before taking her to the hospital. Triple H, patriarch of the Performance Center, is there to tell her it’s okay…
The injury Tegan Nox suffered during this year’s Mae Young Classic aired Wednesday night on WWE Network, prompting the wrestler to finally explain what she hurt exactly.
“On last night’s episode of the Mae Young Classic, during my match with Rhea Ripley I suffered an injury to my left leg very early on and as soon as it happened, I knew it was serious,” Nox explained in a lengthy Twitter post after the show.
Adding, “I tried to carry on as far as I could but a few minutes later after trying to push through the pain and finish the match, it all got too much and the match was stopped. Being greeted backstage by the distraught faces of my friends and coaches was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever experienced and it hurt more than the injury itself.”
Tegan says she was eventually taken to the hospital where a doctor informed she had suffered the following injuries:
- Dislocated kneecap (which reset itself instantly)
- Torn MCL and LCL
- Torn ACL
- Both meniscuses torn
- Bone contusions
- Fracture on left tibia
The 23-year-old says she was then sent to a surgeon and underwent successful ACL and meniscus reconstruction surgery, as well as a procedure on her other knee. This means Tegan will be out of action for awhile, as she says she’s still got a long road to recovery.
As we previously reported, Nox was scheduled to be in the finals before suffering the injury.
